TikTok engagement rate: how to calculate it & what's good
Follower count is the number everyone sees, but engagement rate is the number that actually tells you whether an audience is real and active. Whether you're vetting an influencer, sizing up a competitor, or checking your own growth, a quick engagement calculation cuts through inflated follower numbers.
The simplest formula
The fastest health check uses the two public numbers you can always get: total hearts (lifetime likes) and follower count.
- Lifetime ratio: total hearts ÷ followers. A very low ratio on a large account can hint at purchased or dormant followers.
- Per-video rate: for a single video, (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. This is the cleaner “engagement rate” marketers quote.
TikTok has historically posted much higher engagement than most platforms, so audiences here are expected to interact more. That's exactly why an account with big followers but weak interaction stands out as a red flag.
What counts as a good rate?
Benchmarks shift by niche and account size, but as a rough guide: small, tight-knit accounts often see higher rates than huge ones, and consistency matters — accounts that post several times a week tend to engage noticeably better than those that post once a week. Treat any single number as a signal, not a verdict.
Why country changes the picture
Two accounts with identical engagement can be worth very different amounts. An audience concentrated in a high-value ad market earns far more per view than the same engagement in a low-CPM region. That's why smart vetting pairs the engagement number with the account's registration country before any deal.
Spotting fake or dormant audiences
- Huge follower count with a tiny hearts-to-followers ratio.
- Follower spikes that don't match content quality or posting history.
- A brand-new account (check the join date) that already has massive numbers.
